Description
I love this spot. In all the trips I have made here, I have never once seen another person. I know that people do visit this spot because the trail is well worn. The trip is about 3/4 mile one way with a 500' climb. Its a tough hike with weight on your back. The small switchbacks are not that helpful. The first half of the trip is an easy hike on the Old Mitchell Toll Road. Online resources all state the peak is 5,665' but my sources say 5,666', I wonder if it was purposely changed?
In this photo you can see Graybeard Mountain from the Blue Ridge Pinnacle. About ten minutes before I shot this the nearby forest erupted with noise. It sounded like a very large bear descending a tree and taking off through the forest at full speed. Needless to say, I was on alert on the walk out. I also had a hell of a battle with a swarm of tiny black weevils. They were everywhere!
