I have seen Racers in the trees several times, all were in the early morning. Maybe they feel more comfortable sleeping in the trees? I have also had them take to trees when I was in pursuit of them.

I always have a tough time getting close enough before they disappear. Although I see them all the time I've never seen one in a tree.

Aaron this shot was handed to me on a platter. This snake was about 10' up a lone tree on the side of forest road in Francis Marion NF. It was early morning and he let me photograph him without issues. I actually got very close. The background trees were far enough away to look very smooth. Even though Racers are common in that area, I still enjoy seeing them. Thank You Much!
